Mexico has long been a popular destination in educational travel and there are lots of reasons why. The country provides an international tour experience that’s relatively close to home. That, combined with the opportunity for students to practice their Spanish language skills and the variety of activities and historical sites, makes for a smart choice for your next student tour.

Top Five
1. Chichén Itzá (Yucatan Peninsula)
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this ancient Mayan city is not to be missed. Chicén Itzá was a major cultural, political, and religious center for the Mayan civilization and the city is still offering up new insights into the Mayan people even today. It is still an active archaeological site.
2. Basilica de Guadalupe (Mexico City)
The Basilica de Guadalupe was built on the very site where, in 1531, a man claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary. She commanded that a church be erected there and, to this day, thousands of pilgrims flock to the church to worship.

3. Teotihuacán (North of Mexico City)
Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Teotihuacán was once one of the three largest cities in the world and the largest in pre-Columbian America. Due to its closer proximity to Mexico City, Teotihuacán makes an easy day trip. Your group will enjoy walking the Avenue of the Dead and checking out the two Pyramid of the Sun, as well as the Pyramid of the Moon. Both are still being explored.
4. National Museum of Anthropology (Mexico City)
Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology is considered the best (and most visited) museum in Mexico. The museum highlights the country’s history and culture and well definitely take more than one day to fully explore. If you’re short on time, focus on the Mayan and Aztec halls. Your group will see some amazing artifacts there, including the Aztec Calendar Stone (Piedra del Sol).
5. Tulum
Tulum is a beautiful beach town with some equally beautiful Mayan ruins which makes it a great day trip for your student group. Take some time to explore the ruins of the city, which was built to be a seaport fortress. Then take some time to hang out on the beach, perhaps the secluded beach right below the main pyramid structure.

Mexico offers many other opportunities in addition to the above. It’s a great choice for Spanish language immersion trips, especially if you’re on a budget. Additionally, the country is futbol (soccer) mad, so it also makes a great trip for sports tours. Be sure to ask your tour company about the options.
